Monday 6/2 – And Then There Were None movie
Tuesday 6/3 – Utah Studies Olympics
Wednesday 6/4 – Punnett Squares, Genetic Disorders
Thursday 6/5 – (Last Day for 7th Graders) Cleaning, Softball Games, and Memory Book Signing
Friday 6/6 – No 7th graders at school

Reminder: The late work deadline is this Friday. The Minion Pod teachers will not accept any late or missing work after 3:00pm on this day.
Items for this week:
DNA Extraction: Students will be taking DNA from split pea cells. If you are absent for this lab you will need to read through the lab directions, watch “Pea DNA Extraction” by labcast on youtube, and answer the questions on the back of the worksheet. DNA Extraction
Earthworm Dissection: Students will be learning the anatomy of an earthworm and then performing a dissection. If you were absent for this activity, please pick up a make-up packet from Ms. LeSueur.

POD Auction! And on a fun side note, we will be having our final Minion Pod Auction on Friday to celebrate the end of the year. Bring your rattle cards to make a bid on some of our awesome prizes!

Rosalind Franklin – students will be reading an article about Rosalind Franklin, a female scientist who helped discover the structure of DNA. Once the students have read the article they will answer 5 reading comprehension questions and then write a 1 page essay arguing why or why not Watson and Crick deserved the Nobel Prize. The article is available in class. R. Franklin_Questions . This will be due on Tues. 5/27
DNA Model – students will be creating a paper DNA model/puzzle. The puzzle pieces are available for pick up in class. Building DNA. This will be due on Tues. 5/27

DNA Translation: Students will be matching up a line of DNA base pairs and translating sections of it into a sentence. This activity mimics DNA base pairing and translation of genes into proteins. Decoding DNA

Finish Jelly Bean Classification: see post from last week
Fun with Fictitious Animals: paper copies only. Students will be working backwards on a dichotomous key to find out what certain imaginary animals looks like. Due Thurs.
Animal Classification: Students will use a dichotomous key to find the phylum and class of several preserved animal specimens. animal-kingdom-classification.
If you were absent for all days when we did this assignment you may do a make-up text book assignment instead. Alternative book work for Animal Classification
Quiz: Friday. The quiz will cover scientific names, levels of classification, general classification, and dichotomous keys.Classification Quiz Study Guide
Scientific Names: Students started this assignment (see previous week’s post) and will be finishing it up. We will correct it on Tuesday.
Hardware Key: Students will be using a dichotomous key to identify the “scientific names” of various pieces of hardware. This assignment is available in hard copy only and must be completed in class due to the materials used.
Strange Group: a dichotomous key involving finding the “scientific names” of aliens; paper copies only.
Jelly Bean Classification – Students will use a dichotomous key to identify the flavor of Jelly Belly brand jelly beans before eating them. Paper copy only. Jelly Bean Classification Vocab. Most students should finish this on Wednesday, but I will allow 10 minutes to work on it on Tuesday when we return from break. Due date will be Wed. 4/23.
April 7th – 8th: Language Arts Sage Writing Test
6 Kingdoms Quiz: Thursday, April 10th. Use your notes, green grid, classy chart, and starters to study. You can also quiz yourself using the Pop Quiz – 6 Kingdoms power point.
