Science Fair Power Points

Last week students worked on their power points in class for the final part of the Science Fair. Students will be presenting their projects to the class on 1/25 through 1/30. If your project is late you will have until 2/14 to present it to me for credit. I will be handing out passes for you to come in during TA period.

After the Science Fair, we will be beginning our unit on Heredity starting with the difference between Asexual and Sexual reproduction as well as Inherited and Acquired tratis. Some of the activities we will do during this section will be related to the Ellis Island Activity coming up on February 10th.

End of Unit Test on Thursday

We will have an 80 point end of Unit Test on Thursday 1/12. The test will cover cells and cell organelles, osmosis and diffusion, and the 5 Levels of Organization. We will be doing a study guide today in preparation for the test. Also, please review the notes on these topics so that you will be prepared.

The hardest thing on this test tends to be remembering the functions of the cell organelles. The only ones you will be responsible for knowing are: cell membrane, cell wall, cytoplasm, chloroplast, mitochondria, and nucleus. Please take the time to study and memorize these parts.

Last reminder that the end of quarter late work deadline is this coming Friday, January 13th.

We will be doing a Gummy Bear Osmosis lab as well as a Diaylsis Tubing lab to better learn the principles behind osmosis.

Scientific Method Study Guide

If you did not do well on the test you may retake it one time after school, before school, or during Diamond Time. Make sure you study and/or come in for help before retaking the test. This was not a Rise and Stretch assessment, so if you were absent you will need to come and take the test during the times mentioned above.

We will be starting our biology section of science for the year starting with the cell unit. If you were absent for the Cell Notes here is the Power Point lesson that you can use to fill in your notes:

Please remember that the data table for your Science Fair Experiment needs to be finished by Monday, December 5th. We will be starting on the graph and conclusion in class on the 5th as well. You cannot make a graph without the data.

Midterms grade reports will be printed by the school on December 12th. Please check your grades and missing assignments on skyward and turn in missing work by Friday 12/9 to have them show up on the midterm report.

Matter Unit

Here are some of the assignments we have been working on as part of the Matter Unit. The end of unit TEST (80 pts.) is scheduled for Tuesday, November 22. If you will be absent for the test you will be able to do an absent make up after school or in Diamond Time.

Reminder that students should be working on completing their science fair experiments at home. The data from the completed experiment is due on December 5th.

All late, redo, and absent work/assignments for 1st quarter will be due this Friday, October 28th. This due date is the same for the whole Rockin’ Team (LeSueur, Smalley, Dunn). A mass email to all parents earlier today, but 13 of the parent emails entered into the skyward profile are incorrect, so this will be my other attempt to let you know. Please check skyward to see what assignments you may be missing.

Atom Timeline

Yesterday students turned in their science fair Research packets. If you have not turned yours in yet, make sure that you do. The Research is worth 50 points and getting a zero on this assignment will bring your grade down a lot.

Yesterday we also finished up presentations on scientists that made contributions to our current theory of the atom. Students filled in a time line with dates and notes for participation points.
